“Our care of the child should be governed not by the desire to make them learn things but by the endeavour always to keep burning within that light which is called intelligence”
In Tiny Tetley Studio, Steph Jefferies (plaey.explore.art) uses play and
contemporary art to create an alternative to commercial spaces for children and their families.
Tiny Tetley Studio features a bespoke sound installation by Buffalo Sound Design, play structures designed and built in collaboration with Three Create, and crocheted breastfeeding aids from Leeds Bosom Buddies.
Beginning with a collection of sounds recorded in and around the Tetley building, including the ambient sounds of traffic and construction works and also more specifically, played sounds, like railings, revolving doors and even the golden Tetley signage letters; Buffalo then worked in Solfeggio frequencies that refer to specific tones of sound, said to help to promote various aspects of body and mind health. 639hz, to strengthen relationships with family and community, 417hz, which is associated with clearing negativity and facilitating change and 528hz, associated with love, transformations, imagination and universal healing.
Employing the Montessori approach of freedom of choice, Buffalo were guided by an intuition for what felt right with all the sonic toys they’d given themselves to play with, resulting in a loose and playful montage of related sounds that convey a sense of peaceful, instinctive discovery.
